Whether it’s film or music, Laina Barakat is interested in seeing the best of the best come to the Monadnock region.

Newly hired as the managing director of Monadnock Music, which brings a diverse selection of classical music to Peterborough and surrounding towns through both free and ticketed music events.

Barakat is one of the founders of the Monadnock International Film Festival, and said that in general, arts is her passion.

“On one hand, film and music are so different, but both organizations have a goal of making world-class artists accessible to new audiences. The language, though different, is similar enough to make me feel comfortable,” said Barakat in a recent interview in the Monadnock Music offices.

Barakat said that she has experience with general management, public relations, and advertising – some of her new duties as the managing director – both through MONIFF and through a music venue she started in Keene.

“I have a finger on the pulse of this region,” said Barakat. “And I have a real passion for all things artistic.”

“I am so thrilled to have Laina Barakat joining Monadnock Music as the general manager. I think she possesses all of the skills, experience and energy needed to help lead Monadnock Music into its second half-century,” said Monadnock Music Artistic Director Gil Rose.

Barakat said she is being handed off the organization with it already well-established.

“I’m standing on the shoulders of a half-century of succcessful running,” she said. “My main goal is to continue to deliver what people have come to expect of Monadnock Music.”

She will be focusing on on expanding membership by developing incentives to become a member, and creating more of a year-round presence for Monadnock Music, which is generally known for its summer music series.

“I want to have some events year-round that will bring together the community and celebrate our supporters,” she said.

Monadnock Music opens its summer festival on July 16 and runs through Aug. 13, with concerts on Thursday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoons.
