The Cougar Youth Sports Association basketball team won the Monadnock League championship after beating Rindge and Keene in the playoffs this weekend.
CYSA faced No. 1 seed Rindge on Friday to kick the weekend off. It was a tight, back-and-forth game throughout, with the Cougars maintaining a lead for most of the way. Some big third-quarter threes by Joe Gutwein (team-high 12 points) pushed the CYSA lead out to ten points, but Manny Hodgson (game-high 20 points) kept Rindge in the game and even got them a brief one-point lead.
However, two late buckets by Noah Stewart put CYSA ahead for good and they’d win, 39-33.
After Rindge was upset by Keene, 46-37, CYSA took on the underdogs in the finals. The Cougars started slow, only scoring one point in the opening quarter and taking a three-point deficit into the half. But the lid came off in the third quarter, when Ollie Theriault, Wyatt Beaulieu, Dan McCall and Gutwein each scored a pair of hoops apiece. Gutwein would finish with a game-high 14 and Theriault 11, and CYSA won going away, 42-29.
