Ten golfers qualified for the New Hampshire Amateur Championship after competing at the Shattuck Golf Club in Jaffrey this past weekend.

A total of 22 golfers tested their skills at the 2017 Shattuck State Amateur Qualifier on Saturday, with a score of 85 – or 14 over par – being good enough to advance to next month’s championship at Bretwood Golf Course in Keene.

“I didn’t do as great as I wanted to, but I think it should get the job done,” said Jeff Benson of Bedford, who qualified with a score of 81, good for fourth best on the day. “It’s a good course to play if you don’t try to make hero shots.”

Roman Ojala, 19, of New Ipswich, was another of the ten qualifiers, scoring an 84 on the day.

“It should be right on the cutline,” said Ojala, right after he finished the course, of his score. “I played well on the front nine, but did a little worse on the back nine.”

Ojala said he has competed at three of the past four amateur championships in New Hampshire, missing the cut last year. After making it through “one of the hardest courses in New Hampshire,” Ojala is hoping for a top 50 finish next month.

While nearly half of the golfers in the qualifier made it to the state championship, others weren’t so lucky.

Cooper Tewksbury of Keene was one of the golfers who did not qualify, shooting a 97 on the day. Tewksbury felt that having only played at the Shattuck once prior, coupled with the challenging nature of the course, led to his downfall.

“I did worse than I thought, the course ate me up,” said Tewksbury.

The 114th New Hampshire Amateur Championship will be contested at Bretwood Golf Course from July 10 to 15.  The next qualifier will be at Mount Washington on June 27.
