A Hancock man was found dead Wednesday afternoon after taking his dogs for a swim in the Contoocook River.

Edward Chamberlain, 52, of Hancock was last seen at about 2:30 p.m., but his sister, who asked to have her name withheld, said the dogs returned home at about 2:45 p.m. and she called emergency responders.

The name was confirmed by Delayne Brown of New Hampshire Fish and Game at 6 p.m. — as the Ledger-Transcript was going to press.

A mutual aid call went out at 3:18 p.m. and his body was discovered by a member of the search party at about 5:15 p.m.

He was found by a family member about 500 feet downriver (the Contoocook River flows north), from where he left his cell phone and clothes, on the western bank of the river, only about 400 yards from his house on Cavender Road in Hancock, according to Brown.

In addition to Hancock responders, Peterborough Fire and Rescue, New Hampshire Fish and Game and others were present for the search.

They began with a pair of kayaks and a row boat on the Contoocook River shortly after 3 p.m. Rescue divers entered the water at about 5 p.m.

Chamberlain has adult children and is not married, Brown said.
