After a three year stint in Peterborough, Sarah’s Hat Boxes will be moving its showroom back to its original Hancock location.

“There’s just not enough people going into Peterborough,” said co-owner Peter Mills in an interview last week.

Sarah’s Hat Boxes makes boxes for – you guessed it – hats, but also for weddings, window display advertising or confections, and has in-house screen printing capabilities to print logos, phrases or signage supplied by the customer for one-of a kind boxes.

“We can do one one-of-a-kind box, or we can do thousands,” said Debbie Mills.

The Peterborough shop has already been closed down and cleared out, although the sign on the door indicates for “hat box emergencies” people may still contact the Millses at their Hancock location, where they do their production, until they re-open their showroom and storefront.

They hope to have their storefront open at some point in April, after they renovate the old showroom. They will announce the official re-opening date in the Ledger-Transcript.

“It’s only six miles from the old store, so we’re hoping that it’s not too far out of the way for people who still want to shop there,” said Peter.

Peter and his wife Debbie have been in the business of making and selling hat boxes for over 30 years now, and have had as customers Vogue Magazine, the Golden Globes, and 21st Century Fox, just to name a few. Much of their business is done online, but the couple also sells out of their showroom.

Originally, the showroom was a 2,000 square foot space at their Hancock location, and that’s where it will be moving back to, after the couple weren’t able to get the traffic they were hoping for in Peterborough.

“We thought we’d test the waters, to see if we might want to expand to a bigger location, like Newburyport [Massachusetts],” explained Debbie Mills.

In addition to not getting the amount of sales they were hoping for with the larger storefront on Peterborough’s Grove Street, the two said they also felt the pressure of commuting to an off-site store every day, and feel that the Hancock showroom, connected to their production facility, will be easier to manage.

“Being down at Peterborough, it takes up all your time,” said Debbie.

While neither of the two were ready to say “no” to ever trying to open up another retail location, for now, they said, they would be focusing on their Hancock location and their online sales.

Sarah’s Hat Boxes manufacturing facility and their new showroom are located at 141 Forest Road in Hancock. For more information, call 525-3800.
