Arthur L. Hayward

HILLSBOROUGH — Arthur L. Hayward, 75, of Hillsborough died Aug. 26, 2010, at Concord Hospital in Concord.

He was born in Nashua on March 30, 1935, a son of the late Stanley W. and Myrtle (Hodgeman) Hayward.

Mr. Hayward was raised and educated in Milford and graduated from Milford High School, class of 1953. While in high school, he was captain of the basketball team and served as class president. He earned a bachelor’s degree from New England College in Henniker.

He lived most of his life in the Milford, Amherst and Wilton area. For many years, he wintered in Marco Island, Fla., and enjoyed his camp on Nubanusit Lake in Hancock.

In the early part of his career, Mr. Hayward was employed as an accountant for New Hampshire Ball Bearings, Peterborough, and Sylvania Corporation, Peabody, Mass. He was treasurer and general manager of Hayward Farms, Inc., of Milford, builder and originator of Milford Motor Motel and Hayward’s Trading Post & Country Store. For 35 years, he worked in sales for Northern Products Log Homes.

Mr. Hayward enjoyed fishing, bowling and softball.

He served in the New Hampshire National Guard and was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Amoskeag Veterans Militia.

Mr. Hayward was predeceased by two brothers, Chester Hayward and Wallace Hayward.

Family members include two daughters and a son-in-law, Tamara and John Benjamin of Garrison, N.Y., and Sharman Hayward of Hampton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Laurie Hayward of Buckfield, Maine, and Michael and Julie Hayward of Bristol; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and William Benjamin, Cameron, Jacob and Garrett Hayward; longtime companion Alice Hayward of Milford; his former wives, Libby (Howe) Drolet of Wilton and Alice (Short) Hayward of Buckfield, Maine; his nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, followed by cremation.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Milford Historical Society, P.O. Box 609, Milford 03055.
