DURHAM — After watching her sister sweep the 500-yard freestyle event in the postseason last year, Mascenic sophomore Madison Dinsmore had her sights set on 2010.
Her older sister, Brooke, now a senior, dominated her way to titles in Division II, Meet of Champions and the New England meet, beating a second-place Madison in the final two competitions. One year later, the younger Dinsmore is just one win away from matching her sister’s feat.
After beating her sister at the Division II meet on Saturday, and breaking Brooke’s record set at last year’s New Englands, Madison took home the state title in the 500-freestyle at Meet of Champions on Sunday, setting another new top mark in the process.
At Sunday’s state meet, Madison won the 500-yard freestyle at the Swazey Pool on the campus of UNH in a time of five minutes and 10.78 seconds, about seven seconds ahead of second-place finisher Kelsey Ewing of Bedford High School. Brooke was third in 5:17.86, .15 behind Ewing, who she beat during the Division II event on Saturday.
The sisters took first and second during the DII race, Madison coming out on top by about a half a length of the pool.
Madison will have a chance to match her sister’s 2009 run at the New England meet on Feb. 27 at UNH.
Madison also took third in the 200-yard individual medley on Sunday with a time of 2:17.17, earning her a spot at New Englands in that event as well.
The top six finishers at Meet of Champions automatically qualify for the New England meet. The top nine from Saturday’s Division II meet advanced to Sunday’s Meet of Champions, with both divisions competing.
Brooke finished in a tie for fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, 2:03.46, allowing her to compete in two events at the New Englands.
After advancing from Division II to Meet of Champions in both the 100-butterfly and the 100-backstroke, Mascenic senior Avery Allen took sixth in the 100-fly in 1:04.81, allowing her to go to New Englands as well. But she finished one spot shy of qualifying for the New England in the backstroke.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Allen, both Dinsmores and Kimball Allen, Avery’s younger sister, have also earned the right to compete at the New England meet after taking the last qualifying spot on Sunday, finishing with a time of 3:57.35. The same four failed to qualify in the 200-yard freestyle, taking eighth at Meet of Champions.
The Conant boys swim team sent four individuals and three relay teams to Saturday’s Division II meet.
All three relay teams advanced to Sunday, but only Taylor Anderson made it on the individual front.
Anderson earned the last qualifying spot in the Division II 100-backstroke and then finished 17th at Meet of Champions in 1:07.13. Anderson also competed in the 200-IM on Saturday and took 16th.
The 200-medley relay team of Anderson, Paul Kaufmann, Matt Belletete and Rob Charles were 8th in Division II and then placed 14th at Meet of Champions.
The 400- and 200-yard freestyle teams of Richard Keegan, Josh Clark-Kevan, Kaufmann and Isaac Despres finished sixth and seventh, respectively, at the Division II meet and then were 11th and 15th on Sunday.
Each relay team set their best times for the season at Meet of Champions.
Keegan, in his final meet, placed 12th in the 100-butterfly on Saturday and 15th in 200-IM.
Clark-Kevan finished three spots out of qualifying for Meet of Champions, taking 12th in the 500-freestyle and was 14th in the 200-free.
Despres, a junior, was 13th in the 200-freestyle at Division II and 14th in the 100-free.
