LEXINGTON, Ky. — Edith M. Lawrence of Lexington, Ky., died June 2, 2010.
Born Dec. 3, 1922, in Newburyport, Mass., she was the daughter of Edward P. and Miriam O. (Morrill) Hunt.
Edith spent early years close to the coast in South Hampton. In 1934, Edith, her parents and younger brother Fred moved to Rindge, where her father had been born.
She was raised and educated in New Hampshire and Massachusetts to the level of Registered Nurse. She also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education at what is now Washington Adventist University in Maryland. This is where she met her husband, Noel Lawrence. She worked as an R.N. in Peterborough, Massachusetts, Maryland, Vermont and Michigan.
Edith established and operated the Adventist Nursing Service, a home health-care agency, in Pontiac, Mich., for about 15 years. Many people were introduced to principles of service to others and healthy living in Edith’s home health aide classes. Graduates blessed the elderly of many prominent families of southeastern Michigan while earning money to continue their education.
Edith is survived by her husband of 61 years, Noel Lawrence, of Pontiac, Mich.; son Donald Lawrence of Rindge; daughters M. Jean Moon of Lexington and V. Joan Lawrence of Dekalb, Ill.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother, Fred Hunt of Reading, Vt., as well as nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions can be made in Edith’s name to the India Mission fund of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church, P.O. Box 938, Keene 03431. This fund supports the work of Edith’s grandson Orion Lawrence and his wife, Keren, feeding and educating orphans in West Bengal near Kolkata, India.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church, 42 Forbush Lane, off Rte. 12 South, Swanzey.
