MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — Elizabeth J. “Betty” (McCarthy) Cotney, 88, died May 25, 2010, at Tidelands Hospice House in Georgetown, S.C.
She was born in Springfield, Mo., the daughter of John and Lucille McCarthy. She was formerly from the areas of Milford, Amherst and New Ipswich, from 1967 - 1989.
She was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. She was a member of the Marine Corps League, also the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in South Carolina. She was a member of the Women Marines Association, including several years as president of the local New Hampshire/Vermont chapter.
She was involved in many organizations while a resident of South Carolina. Elizabeth was a member of St. Cyprian Catholic Church in Georgetown, S.C.
Locally she had been a member of St. Patrick Church, Milford, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Greenville.
She was predeceased by her husband, John W. Cotney; a son, Bruce Cotney; and a brother, John J.
McCarthy Jr.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Lu Burciaga of Newburyport, Mass., and Valerie Miller of South Carolina; a son, David Cotney of Brookline Mass., seven grandchildren: Jeneanne Graham, Jason Pina, Melena LePree, Andrea Cunningham, Aaron Beaulieu, Julia Cotney and Isabelle Cotney; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother. Harold “Bill” McCarthy of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in South Carolina.
There will be a committal service on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the chapel in Mt. Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum, Goffstown Road, Manchester.
