Peterborough resident, 89, worked for N.H. Ball Bearings for 26 years

PETERBOROUGH — Joseph Edgar Broyles, age 89, died at Good Shepherd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jaffrey on March 3, 2010.

Joe was born to Edgar and Josephine (Andreotta) Broyles on Oct. 29, 1920, in Pittsfield, Mass.

He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939 and was married to Jane Menard on Nov. 29, 1941.

Joe apprenticed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn., and was later employed as a tool and die maker there. He served briefly in the U.S. Navy late in World War II. His subsequent career as a tool-and-die maker included employment at North and Judd Foundry in New Britain, Conn., Kell-Strom in Wethersfield, Conn., and ownership of Capitol Machine Works in Hartford until moving his family to Peterborough, with Firetox Systems, a manufacturer of automatic fire extinguishers, in 1956.

In 1959 Joe took a position as a production engineer at N.H. Ball Bearings Co., where he remained until his retirement in 1985.

Ever involved in the Peterborough community, Joe was then employed by Brothers Market, the Ashwood Basket Company and Laidlaw Transit before retiring again in 2000.

He served his communities as a Boy Scout leader and member of the Connecticut chapter of the Catholic War Veterans. In Peterborough he was an active member of the American Society of Manufacturing Engineers and a lector at Saint Peter Church of the Divine Mercy Parish. Joe was actively involved in community affairs as an advocate for education.

Joe is survived by his children, Joseph C. Broyles and wife, Stasia Millett, of Wilton, Donald (Marnee) Willson-Broyles of Eau Claire, Wis., Mary Jane (Robert) Lambert of Peterborough, and Margaret (Jon) Day of Edgewater, Md.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Richard Broyles of Fort Mill, S.C., William Broyles of Albany, N.Y., and Bruce Broyles of Chicopee, Mass.; a sister, Josephine Parente of Oro Valley, Ariz.; his former daughter-in-law, Catherine Dart of Ashburnham, Mass., and his companion of 21 years, Amy Raymond of Rindge.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Cutter Pickford, in 1989, his former wife, Jane Menard in 2007, and his granddaughter Penney Nichols Patterson in 1993.

Family and friends are warmly invited to calling hours on Friday, March 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cournoyer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 33 River St., (Route 202) Jaffrey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at Saint Peter Church of the Divine Mercy Parish, Vine Street, Peterborough. The Rev. Wilfred Deschamps will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the spring at Conant Cemetery in Jaffrey.
