NEW IPSWICH — Lorraine K. Smith, 92, of Turnpike Road, died Sunday, May, 16 2010, at Monadnock Community Hospital, Peterborough, following a brief illness.
She was born in New York City on Feb. 21, 1918, the daughter of Christofer and Marie (Fetsch) Klassen. She was raised in New York City, had spent a couple years in upstate New York and 58 years in New Ipswich.
She was employed many years by Eaton Insurance of Greenville.
She was also an office manager for Dr. Robert Wellwood who formerly practiced in Greenville and New Ipswich.
She had served as the assistant town clerk of Greenville and treasurer for the town of New Ipswich.
Mrs. Smith owned Smith’s Blueberry of New Ipswich and was known as the New Hampshire Blueberry lady.
She was a member of the LeClair-Caron-Pelletier American Legion Auxiliary, having served for 47 years. She was also a member of the Greenville Women’s Club, the New Ipswich Historical Society, and the Mascenic Valley Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband, Merrill J. “Smitty” Smith, in 1995 and a daughter, Christie Garneau, in 2005.
She is survived by a son, Robert L. Smith and his wife, Ellen, of West Townsend, Mass.; a son-in-law, John Garneau of New Ipswich; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; also many friends, including her close friend Patty Hoffman of New Ipswich; nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be celebrated Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m. in the New Ipswich Congregational Church on Main Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the public libraries in either New Ipswich or Greenville.
The Fournier Funeral Home, 12 High St., Greenville is in charge of arrangements.
