PETERBOROUGH — Mary Campanella Gold died Aug. 16, 2010, at Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough.
She was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Hackensack, N.J., daughter of Antonio and Carmela (Parisi) Campanella. She moved to Peterborough in 2006, and was a long-time Chesterfield resident. She spent summers in Chesterfield with her family from 1929 to 1940.
From 1939 to 1942, Ms. Gold worked as a salesperson and buyer at Vogue Drapery in Hackensack, where she met her husband Jack (Jacob). She and Jack married on June 20, 1942.
During World War II, the couple lived in Hinesville, Ga., while Jack was a chief warrant officer at Camp Stewart. Jack went overseas in December 1944, while Ms. Gold moved back to Hackensack. Jack returned in 1946, and that year they moved to the family homestead in Chesterfield.
In 1959, she and Jack established Chesterfield Fabrics in Brattleboro, and they sold the business in 1971. As a decorating consultant, Ms. Gold decorated many homes, businesses and ski lodges in southeastern Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire.
After selling the business, Ms. Gold continued as a freelance decorator; her former clients included Beech Hill Hospital in Dublin. Later, she obtained a real estate license, and from 1972 to 1982 she worked for Karl Boes and Dick Conway in Keene and Chesterfield.
Ms. Gold cherished Chesterfield, and volunteered at the Chesterfield Library and at the Chesterfield Historical Society.
Her husband, Jack, died in 1978. Ms. Gold is survived by family, Eileen and Sam Hackler of Jaffrey Center; Susan Carmela Gold of San Francisco, Calif.; Jack Anthony Gold and James Mayfield of San Francisco and Providence, R.I. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Jason and his wife, Rebecca Hackler, Susan Hackler and her husband, Jason Reimers; and Jacob (Jake) Dolan, and one great-granddaughter, Eliza Bella Hackler. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins.
Her four sisters died earlier: Josie Iurato of Maywood, N.J.; Angelina Zisa of Palisades Park, N.J.; Nancy Campanella of and Jennie Capilli of Hackensack, N.J.; also four brothers: Samuel and Joseph Campanella of Hackensack; Matthew Campanella of Milburn, N.J.; John Campanella of Sandown.
A service will be held at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Chesterfield on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Chesterfield Cemetery. The Rev. Ann Partner will officiate.
