Francestown woman, 92, had career in fashion

FRANCESTOWN — Matilda B. Boyle, 92, passed away peacefully at Summerhill Assisted Living in Peterborough on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

Matilda, better known as Mit, was born on June 20, 1917, in Francestown to Dorothy (Clement) and William Basset.

She attended Lynn English High School. After graduating from Chamberlain School in Boston in 1937, she moved to New York City and worked in the executive training program at Bloomingdale’s and then as a manager at Gimbel’s.

In 1944, she married Murray Borden Boyle in New York City and they lived in Greenwich Village until their move to New Hampshire in 1945. Mit lived in Gloucester, Mass., for a few years while her husband worked in the fishing industry, and then returned to Francestown to raise her family.

When her daughter graduated from high school in 1958, Mit went to New York City to again pursue her career in fashion. She worked at Best and Company, Lord and Taylor, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. With her expertise in bridal fashion, she later ran a manufacturer’s bridal showroom.

In 1985, Mit retired and returned once again to Francestown where she became the guiding force in the preservation, fundraising and programming for the Old Meetinghouse.

The door of Mit’s home on Main Street was always open to friends and neighbors, who passed through daily to enjoy her warm, genial companionship and spirited conversation.

Mit spent the last two years of her life at the assisted living facility at Summerhill in Peterborough.

She was predeceased by her husband, Murray B. Boyle, who died in 1975. She is survived by her daughter, Susan B. Brackett of Meredith; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at the Old Meeting House on June 5 in Francestown.

Memorial donations may be made to The Old Meeting House Inc., P.O. Box 213, Francestown 03043.

Jellison Funeral Home of Peterborough is assisting the family with arrangements.

"Well this place advertises as being a restaurant which also has a bar, like most places. But this place was crawling with drunks. It was. . ."

"They seem to have stolen a bit of the best from every other shop downtown. Who gives gift baskets anymore, really? So cheesy."
