Peterborough man an editor for Boston Globe

PETERBOROUGH — Robert J. Drury, 90, died on Jan. 28, 2010, at RiverMead Retirement Community.

Mr. Drury was born in Manchester on March 28, 1920, the son of Mary (Griffin) and James Drury.

He lived in Walpole and Scituate, Mass., before moving to Peterborough.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was employed by several newspapers including the Manchester Union Leader, the Concord Monitor and The Boston Globe as a desk editor. He also worked as a reporter on special stories. While reporting, he traveled with Barry Goldwater when he was a U.S. presidential candidate.

Mr. Drury was a member of the Saint Anselm Church in Manchester for many years and he had been president of the Colonial Square Condominium Association. He enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Astound Drury, to whom he has been married for more than 60 years. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Patricia Ingelstrom and her husband, Carl, of Greenfield, Marie Durant of Keene and Nancy Smith of Marlborough; four cousins, Virginia Bruton of Newport, Noreen Northridge of New Durham, Jane Chateauneuf of Leesburg, Fla., and Michael Witham of Newport.

His brother, James Drury, died earlier.

Calling hours will be private for the family.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday at St. Peter’s Church of Divine Mercy Parish, Vine Street, Peterborough. The Rev. Gerald Belanger, pastor, was celebrant.

Burial will be in the spring at the Lyndeborough Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to St. Vincent de Paul Society, in care of St. Peter Church of Divine Mercy Parish, 18 Vine St., Peterborough 03458, or to the Salvation Army Peterborough, P.O. Box 577, Peterborough 03458.
