Roland R. ‘Bing’ Boucher

Jaffrey man taught at Conant, coached baseball

JAFFREY — Roland R. “Bing” Boucher, 91, of Jaffrey passed away Feb. 21, 2010, at home after a long illness.

He was born in Lebanon on Jan. 10, 1919, son of Raoul and Wilda Boucher.

He attended Lebanon schools, was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in history and did graduate work at Harvard and Boston University.

Bing was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan during the occupation.

After the war, he taught history at West Lebanon High School where he also coached the 1948 basketball team to a state championship. From 1949 to 1952, he taught at Vermont Junior College in Montpelier. He taught History at Conant High School from 1952 to 1962. In 1956, he coached, with great pride, the Conant baseball team to its first and, so far, only state championship.

Bing worked for the N.H. Department of Education from 1962 to 1964 and became assistant principal at Keene High School in 1964 where he worked for 17 years until his retirement in 1981.

Among his other accomplishments, he served as state director of the AARP, president of Retired Educators Association, member of St. Patrick School Board, Diocese School Board in Manchester, Keene Diocese Deanery and lector at St. Patrick Church.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Boucher of Jaffrey, daughters Marilyn Bean of Dublin and Barbara O’Connor of Danville, Calif., sons Roy Drew of Dugway, Utah, and Dean Drew of Holladay, Utah, 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, 87 Main St., Jaffrey. Private burial in St. Patrick Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bing’s memory to the Roland R. Boucher Scholarship, 3 Conant Way, Jaffrey 03452, attention Patty Proulx.

The Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River St., Jaffrey is assisting the family with arrangements.
