HANCOCK — William J. McKim, Jr., of Hancock, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at 91 years of age at Keene Center-Genesis, Keene. William was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on May 11, 1920, the son of Ida Gelling McKim and William J. McKim, Sr. He moved to Hancock in 1977 to be near his family. Prior to the move to Hancock he had lived in Scarborough, N.Y., for 25 years moving there from Yonkers where he grew up.
William earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Rutgers University participating in the accelerated officers training program. After graduation he served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp stationed in the Pacific theatre primarily on Guam.
William had a lifelong interest in architecture and had considered majoring in this subject during his college years. He was active in the design and building of both his home in Scarborough and Hancock. William enjoyed woodworking, making furniture and studying his Scottish ancestry.
He is survived by his nieces, Janet Young of Hancock and Carol Livellara of Germantown, N.Y., and by a grand niece, Kimberly Livellara of Northfield, Vt. His beloved sister, Margaret McKim Young, predeceased him.
A graveside service and burial will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the McKim family plot at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, N.Y. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Jellison Funeral Home (jellisonfuneralhome.com), Peterborough, is assisting the family with arrangements.
