PETERBOROUGH — In hopes of raising money for badly needed renovations to ConVal High School’s Lucy Hurlin Theatre, junior Megan MacInnes started the Friends of ConVal Drama.
According to MacInnes, one anonymous “friend” might donate up to $1,000.
“I saw a need in my school’s drama program,” MacInnes wrote in an e-mail to the Ledger-Transcript on recently. “Our actors, directors and stage crew are outstanding, but our theatre is in desperate need of renovations.”
MacInnes wrote that there have been problems with the theater curtain, sound system, lighting system and seating.
With hard economic times making it difficult for the district to replace these components to the theater, MacInnes decided to take matters into her own hands.
“After watching the success of the Football Lights Committee, we decided to try something similar for the performing arts,” MacInnes wrote.
The Friends’ first fundraiser was the school's fall play, “Dark of the Moon,” often described as an “Appalachian Romeo and Juliet." During the Saturday and Sunday performances, the Friends of ConVal Drama had a bake sale and a 50/50 raffle.
Menwhile, there has been an added challenge. One anonymous local resident pledged to match (up to $1,000) any donations the Friends receive by Friday.
Potential donors may contact play director Kerby Elliott at kelliott@conval.edu or 924-3869.
