‘Proof’ stage read this weekend

Project Shakespeare will be presenting a staged reading of “Proof” by David Auburn at two locations this weekend.

On Friday a reading will be presented in the Lucy Hurlin Theater at ConVal High School and again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Jaffrey Civic Center.

Project Shakespeare students Alexa Murray, Christopher Commander and Grace Durnan, and Jason Lambert, local professional actor and teacher at ConVal High School, will present a reading of this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play.

Lambert will be reading the role of Robert and serving as a ‘mentor’ actor to the student cast members. Cailin Ennis and Lauren LeBritton will serve as technical assistants.

Set on the back porch of a house near the University of Chicago, this contemporary story centers on Catherine, unsettled by the death of her father, Robert, a celebrated mathematician who became helplessly “bughouse,” as he put it, in his later years. Catherine relinquished her own academic studies in the field to care for Robert, and now is at loose ends. Robert’s elder daughter, Claire, who arrives from New York for the funeral, fears that the sadly withdrawn Catherine may have inherited her father’s mental instability, as well as some of his genius, and urges her sister to return East with her for therapy.

Hal, one of Robert’s former students, has been vainly sifting through scores of Robert’s scribbled notebooks to see whether the man conceived of anything significant during his lengthy illness. Romance is kindled between Catherine and Hal but their budding relationship breaks down when Catherine shows Hal the contents of a notebook she claims to have authored. The disbelieving reactions of Claire and especially Hal shatter Catherine’s frail composure.

The play’s resolution is a touching study in family devotion, love, fears and trust.

Tickets are $7 for adults /and $5 for seniors and students and will be available at the door before the show.

This play has adult themes and is not suggested for young children.

There also will be a special performance to benefit the “For England!” campaign sending Project Shakespeare’s cast of “Hamlet” to perform at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s outdoor theatre, The Dell, in Stratford-upon-Avon in August.

The staged reading will be performed at Sunflowers Restaurant on Tuesday, March 11, at 6 p.m. The evening includes soup, salad, bread, dessert and beverage. Tickets are $20, not including tax and gratuity. To reserve, call 593-3303.
