Museums offer free admission

Again this year the Mariposa Museum will participate in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 1,800 museums across America offering free admission to all active-duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

For the summer, the Mariposa Museum is offering interactive learning for all ages including “Where in the World?” a new self-directed adventure for children, folk art from around the world and the current exhibition “Sacred Geography — Many Cultures One Earth” and gallery exhibit “The Kopanang Creation Canticle.”

The free admission program is available to any bearer of a valid ID card from the active military as well as members of the National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and NOAA Commissioned Corps.

The Mariposa will be open every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the summer. For more information, visit www.mariposamuseum.org or call 924-4555.

Hillsborough Historical Society is also participating in Blue Star Museums at the President Franklin Pierce Historic Site and the Hillsborough Heritage Museum.

The President Franklin Pierce Homestead Historic Site was built in 1804 by Benjamin Pierce, the year his son Franklin, the future president, was born.

The Hillsborough Heritage Museum in the Old Firehouse is a cooperative effort with the town of Hillsborough.

The museum houses many artifacts highlighting more than 200 years of local history, as well as the Manahan-Phelps-McCulloch photo collection, picturing the life in a mill town in the 19th and 20th centuries. Part of the museum is dedicated to more than 100 years of Hillsborough’s firefighters.

The Pierce Homestead Historic Site opens weekends Memorial Day weekend and then through the month of June, opening for the season on Fridays through Tuesdays during July and August. Hours are 10 a.m. through 4 p.m., with the last tour beginning no later than 3:15 p.m. The Heritage Museum is open on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, beginning in June, and other times by chance.
