‘Professor Apple’ to discuss local varieties

Author and historian Tom Burford (aka, “Professor Apple”) returns to the Harris Center for Conservation Education in Hancock to discuss apples Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m.

Burford’s family has been growing apples in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia since 1715, and he himself is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on all aspects of apples and their rich cultural traditions. A horticulturalist, orchardist, and nurseryman, Burford is also a consultant who specializes in the restoration, re-creation, and design of orchards at historic sites and private estates, including Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, as well as backyard and commercial orchards.

Slow Food Monadnock and the Harris Center are sponsoring the presentation, which will focus on the diversity of American apples and their many uses. There will be an opportunity to taste uncommon varieties of rare and regional apples, as well as sample artisan New England cheeses and hard and sweet ciders.

Burford is the author of the newly published book, Apples of North America, and he will have copies on hand for sale and signing. In addition, local author and cider expert Ben Watson will be on hand to present the cheeses and ciders and sign copies of the new color edition of his classic book, Cider, Hard and Sweet.
