Student of the month deVera loves to volunteer
Tia deVera, an eighth grader at St. Patrick School, Jaffrey, was selected to be the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary Student of the Month. She was chosen by Principal Sister Cecile for being a top student and a role model. She is a willing volunteer and shares her thoughts when a service idea is talked about.
When the earthquake hit Haiti, Tia decided to use her own money and send financial help. Since the earthquake, she has sent money each year on the date the earthquake occurred. Last year, the students helped the Mary, Gate of Heaven Orphanage in Haiti. Tia and her mother Dr. Adele deVera headed the project. Moms and kids came on Saturdays with sewing machines and materials. They worked with the founder of the orphanage, Sr. Claire Daneau, who gave us the ages and sizes of the children. Tia cut out most of the dresses and shorts carefully matching prints and colors. The school sent two barrels of clothing and school supplies.
Tia went with her mother to Jamaica to help the children there. Tia helped with registering patients and escorting them to the doctor.
