Direct support provider honored
Harrisville’s Beverly Packard, the caregiver specialist at Monadnock ServiceLink Aging and Disability Resource Center, has been recognized with the Gateways Community Services’ Excellence in Service Award for Direct Support Professionals.
The award is given to honor exemplary service to individuals with disabilities and elders in need of care demonstrated by those among the 500 direct support professionals serving the Greater Nashua region.
“These dedicated workers have helped hundreds of people participate and maintain active lives in our community,” notes the letter of congratulations from Peter Van Voorhis, vice president of Community Services of Gateways Community Services.
Packard was nominated for the award by Lorraine Harrington and Dolores Collier, two family caregivers who have worked with her to access support through the N.H. Family Caregiver Program. Harrington commented, “[Packard] kept asking the next question until she got help for me with something I didn’t even know yet that I needed.”
Gateways Community Services honored Packard and 15 others at their 15th Annual Direct Support Professional Award and Recognition Breakfast, held at the Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua on June 11.
“It was humbling to receive this recognition on the one hand,” noted Packard, “but it’s also very gratifying when you receive that validation that what you are doing is important.”
She reflected on the work of all of the direct support professionals in the community and how they are at the core of what support agencies do.
“These are the people in the field,” she explained, “and so they have a pulse on what’s going on. It’s a very important base of knowledge.”
