RINDGE — More than 600 Franklin Pierce University graduates and the university’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies sat beneath picture-perfect skies Saturday morning as they bid farewell to a place they had come to call home.

Proposed cell tower in debate

JAFFREY — A proposed 125-foot AT&T communications tower on Mountain Road that developers say would improve cell phone service in the area received mixed reviews at a public hearing before the Planning Board on Tuesday night.

Market Basket to pay $400K in fines

The U.S. Department of Labor announced Monday that it has reached a settlement with DeMoulas Super Markets Inc. The grocery chain has agreed to pay $400,000 in fines and correct workplace-safety violations at more than 60 of its Market Basket stores, including one in Rindge.

A Rindge Market Basket employee sustained serious injuries in April 2011 after falling 11 feet off a storage mezzanine and onto a concrete floor.

Slurs trigger FPU rally against racism at school courtyard

RINDGE — About 100 Franklin Pierce University students, faculty and staff left the comforts of their offices and classrooms Wednesday afternoon to take a public stand against racism in the school’s main courtyard, in response to racial slurs tweeted by FPU freshman Charlie Cobb of Burlington, Vt., last week.

OSHA investigating fires at pellet plant

JAFFREY — More than 60 firefighters from approximately a dozen area fire departments responded to a fire in a cooling unit at New England Wood Pellet early Friday morning, making the fire the second one at the Jaffrey plant in the past six months.

Friday’s fire has since prompted a new inspection by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which announced last week proposed fines totaling $147,000 for fire and explosion hazards in the aftermath of a fire that occurred at the plant on October 20, 2011.

FITZWILLIAM — Gary Heald hasn’t paid an electric bill in 30 years. No, he’s not shirking the utility companies — the Franklin Pierce University computer science professor has been living “off the grid,” investing in solar energy, propane refrigerators and wood heat as alternatives to electricity.

She was drawing before she could walk or talk, and as soon as she could crawl and grab objects, Joo Hee Ui said she learned to handle a brush and started painting. Alongside her mom, a Korean fine arts professor, Ui said she was given a unique opportunity to explore color and texture at an early age, something that helped make her the artist she is today.

New principal announced for Rindge Memorial

RINDGE — The Jaffrey-Rindge School District completed its search for a new principal at the Rindge Memorial School, announcing Monday that Jurg Jenzer, who is currently the principal at State Street School in Windsor, Vt., had been chosen among nearly 20 other applicants.

Current Rindge Memorial School Principal John Stone will retire this June, after serving more than 30 years as an educator. The School District began its search to fill the position shortly after Stone announced his retirement in January.
