School superintendent resigns

April 25th 2012 at 09:49:00 AM

WILTON -- The Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative School Board unanimously accepted the resignation of Supt. Trevor Ebel at the start of its meeting Tuesday night.

The School Board then announced that the school district had concluded its investigation into the alleged misuse of the district's credit card to pay for limo services, alcohol and movies, which were charged on the card while school officials were at out-of-state conferences. The investigation also addressed allegations that an employee had received several pay advances, which is against district policy.

Board Chair Geoff Brock said the district would not reveal the name of the employee involved; the board has sealed the results of the investigation for 50 years to protect the reputation of a district employee.

Ebel is the credit card holder, according to bank statements.

Chief calling recent fires suspicious

April 24th 2012 at 10:36:16 AM

RINDGE — As multiple towns dealt with brush fires spurred along by exceptionally dry conditions in the last week, Rindge Fire Chief Rickard Donovan finds several recent fires in his town suspicious.

Donovan said that Rindge has dealt with four brush fires this month and in each case the cause has yet to be determined. He said several of the fires’ circumstances led him to wonder just how they had started. In each of the blazes in Rindge, Donovan said that no one was hurt and, except for the loss of woodlands, there was no property damage either.

The first brush fire Rindge handled this month occurred on April 7 on Main Street; it was discovered by some youths in town, said Donovan. The blaze was contained to a fairly small area and was brought under control by the Fire Department within an hour-and-a-half, he said.

Selectmen at odds over pay

April 24th 2012 at 10:22:23 AM

FRANCESTOWN — Selectman Scott Carbee has refused to sign a pay voucher over and above the selectman’s stipend for fellow Select Board member Abigail Arnold in compensation for working in the town offices on April 10.

But Arnold was paid anyway, as she and fellow Select Board member Betsy Hardwick placed their names on the voucher, providing the required number of signatures.

The voucher was worth $113.96 in net pay for eight hours of work at the Town Hall at $20 per hour.

At the Select Board meeting on April 16, Carbee took issue with Arnold being paid to run the town office on April 10, while the town’s Administrative Assistant Christine Lavery was out of the office to attend a leadership program.
