MONADNOCK LEDGER-TRANSCRIPT

From the ground up

Beginning next month, a new marketplace combining locally grown produce with handcrafted goods will be taking place every Monday afternoon, rain or shine, in the area of the northeast parking lot at Monadnock Community Hospital.

Looking for positive signs

Some regional real estate brokers are viewing the “pending home sales index,” released by the National Association of Realtors in late March, as reason for guarded optimism. The index, released monthly, shows that real estate contracts for existing single-family homes, condos and co-ops have increased nationwide by 2.1 percent from January to February.

Student felt earthquake 200 miles away

PETERBOROUGH — Bridget Ferrill, 17, a ConVal student who is spending her entire senior year of high school as the only American studying in a high school in Komagane, Japan, this year, will be staying, she told her family, “to be part of Japan’s recovery.”

In a busy world, she’s making every minute count

We’ve all wished for another hour or two to take care of some pressing task, to complete another project or to squeeze just a little more personal time out of our busy days. It’s a minor annoyance for some, but can also be a debilitating impediment for others.

Flood waters close Concord Street north of Peterborough library

March 7th 2011 at 01:55:02 PM

PETERBOROUGH – According to police dispatch, Route 202 was closed from the Peterborough Town Library north to just south of Sand Hill Rd. opposite the Jack Daniels Motor Inn because of flooding. Ice dams in the Contoocook caused the flooding, which covered Route 202/Concord St. with 12 to 18 inches of water by 1:45 p.m.

With ConVal schools approaching dismissal, calls were placed to Goffstown Trucking to reroute school buses taking students home.

Getting social

Social media. What is it and why is it important to business?

Bracing for the boom

When the U.S. Census bureau first noticed a dramatic surge in births across the country in the years preceding the 1950 census, analysts discovered the steepest increase came during the year 1946. That year was the kickoff for a continued growth in the number of babies being born in the country that didn’t really abate for almost 18 years.

Recipe for success

Keeping a variety of home goods and food staples on hand has always been the hallmark of the quintessential small New England general store: something for everyone.

Buying local: It's in the bag

A new recycled shopping bag introduced recently by Peterborough’s W.G. Ellerkamp, Inc. is an illustration of the company’s commitment to sustainability. The mantra, overused and overstated in some business quarters, is put into continual practice by this sevenperson company that operates in a 10,000square-foot space at the end of Vose Farm Road.

Doing what it takes

When you’re a small-business owner and your business relies on the housing construction industry, you’ve got to be ready for its cyclical nature. But when the industry slows as much as it has lately and for as long as it has, you’ve got to be flexible in order to keep the bills paid. This is especially critical for businesses that are a one-worker shop.
