The Keene State College Concert Band will perform Rockets and Refrains on Thursday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for KSC students, senior citizens, and youth ages 17 and younger. Tickets are available through the box office at 603-358-2168 or online at www.keene.edu/racbp. A transcription of Franz Joseph Haydn's St. Anthony Divertimento will beperformed in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Austrian's passing,and this composer's enduring influence on the world will be marked bythe performance of Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn by Norman Dello Joio.Lucien Caillet's transcription of the "Aria: The Song of Our Country"from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2 by Heitor Villa-Lobos also will beperformed. This year is the 50th anniversary of the death ofVilla-Lobos, often described as the best-known and most significantLatin American composer to date. KSC music education major and assistant conductor LoriKjellander of Belmont, N.H., will conduct two works: Roland Barrett'sFirefall and Four Dance Episodes for Band, a 2004 composition by GaryGilroy. Trumpeter Nathan Shower of Merrimack, N.H., will be the featuredsoloist on the Prayer of St. Gregory, composed by Alan Hovhaness.The concert band is directed by Jim Chesebrough, who received hisbachelor of music education degree from Heidelberg College in Tiffin,Ohio, and his master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees fromthe University of Connecticut. In addition to conducting the band,Chesebrough is assistant professor of music at Keene State, where heteaches classes in music education, conducting, and applied music. He isfrequently called upon as an adjudicator, guest conductor, and clinicianthroughout New England. He conducts the Newmont Military Band, are-creation of a small-town brass band of the late 1800s. In 1998, theNew Hampshire Band Directors' Association honored him as theirOutstanding Band Director of the Year.
