Dublin town officials have confirmed that a new police chief candidate has been conditionally offered the position with the town’s police department. Officials also said the candidate will not be named until successfully completing the required tests and background checks.
“We’re in the background process with the candidate,” said James Letourneau, Dublin’s full-time police chief up until Dec. 31, 2013, and now the town’s part-time police chief. Letourneau said by phone Monday that the candidate will have to undergo a variety of tests and background checks, including psychological, polygraph and physical fitness exams. “It’s the whole gamut,” Letourneau said. “It’s just like hiring a new officer.”
The background checks are being performed by the Keene Police Department, a decision made by the Select Board on Nov. 25.
In the meantime, Letourneau said he is working up to 32 hours a week to fill in until a new chief is hired, which the Dublin Select Board voted to approve in December, according to meeting minutes. “I’m here until the transition takes place,” said Letourneau, who’s served as chief for the past 16 years.
When a new chief is eventually hired, Letourneau will take on his new job as operations manager at Hawley Mountain Guest Ranch in McLeod, Mont. Letourneau announced his intent to retire from police work in October 2013, telling the Ledger-Transcript he was looking for a change in career paths after 25 years of service.
As a special send-off, the Dublin Police Department held an open house party for Letourneau on Sunday at the Dublin Consolidated School. According to the department’s Facebook page, nearly 100 people attended. “It was humbling,” said Letourneau of the celebration. “It was really wonderful to have so many show up.”
