This weekend’s dual basketball doubleheaders at ConVal had everything a fan could want: interesting storylines, fierce competition, amazing individual performances – everything, in fact, except a Cougar victory.

On Friday night, ConVal hosted longtime rival Souhegan’s boys and girls teams. The historically bitter matchup was made extra intriguing this season, as former Cougar boys head coach Peter Pierce made his return to ConVal, this time as the head coach of the Saber boys. The Cougars fought hard against their old coach and trailed by only two at halftime, but Souhegan kept up the pressure in the second en route to a 55-45 victory. It was an emotional game that saw frustrated first-year ConVal coach Kevin Proctor hit with a technical foul with seconds left in the fourth quarter and the game out of reach. Senior Kyle Murray led the Cougars with 12 points, and junior Noah Cail added 10 off the bench, including a big three-pointer down the stretch.

“Body hurts, heart hurts, back at it tomorrow,” tweeted senior forward Malik Earle after the game.

The flu-ridden ConVal girls team fared little better against Souhegan that night. The Cougars have struggled mightily to close out games this season; after taking an 11-10 lead into the locker room, ConVal was outscored 28-6 in the second half, including a dominant 20-2 fourth quarter run by the Sabers that put the Cougars away for good. ConVal, without starting forward Megan Buydos and reserve Kelsey Walker, who were both out with the flu, once again leaned on senior Jess Nerz for their scoring; she put in 11 points to go with nine rebounds and two assists.

Less than 24 hours later, ConVal was indeed back at it again. The girls hosted Milford in what was a very close, competitive game right down to the wire. ConVal kept it close for the majority of the contest; Milford never led by more than six points until the final minute, but ConVal couldn’t close the gap and lost the game 42-32. Nerz led all scorers with 20; Buydos contributed six points and a litany of intangible hustle plays in her return to the court. The ConVal girls varsity team is now 2-4 on the season. They host Monadnock (3-5) tonight at 6:30 p.m.

The ConVal boys game against Bishop Brady featured one of the great individual performances that has ever taken place in the ConVal gymnasium; unfortunately for the Cougars and their fans, it was visiting Brady guard Jourdain Bell who put on a show. Bell got every look he wanted in the first half, scoring 27 before halftime on a seemingly inexhaustible supply of floaters in the paint, three-pointers and free throws. Bell settled into the role of the playmaker in the second half, dropping dimes left and right, many of which ended up in the hands of younger brother Joe Bell, who scored 24. The elder Bell finished with a triple-double: 41 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as Brady routed ConVal 93-60.

It was another frustrating game for the Cougars; senior guard Jordan Moore struggled with turnovers and got into early foul trouble, as did senior center Kyle Murray. Both would foul out and could only watch as Bishop Brady kept up their scoring and defensive intensity late into the game when the outcome was no longer in question.

“Challenging for any kid to get the score run up on them, but the key is to learn from this and move forward,” Proctor said after the game. “If you don’t want a team to run the score up, you need to play better defense. We just didn’t have enough of that tonight.”

With Murray and Moore on the bench, it was up to guard Jaymes Finley and forward Will Chambers to shoulder the scoring load. Finley scored 10, including a pair of back-to-back threes at the end of the first half to keep the Cougars in the game. Chambers had his best game of the season; he scored 27 points and owned the offensive glass, ripping down 17 boards.

“We’ve got to work on better lockdown defense,” Chambers said after the game. “We had the intensity, and then during the third quarter, we kind of let up a little bit and they went on a run, and continued to get a higher lead. That kind of brought us down and crushed us. Hopefully we can keep our intensity throughout the game, and come out with a win next game. “

ConVal (0-6) is still looking for their first win of the season; they’ll have a good shot at it tonight as they travel to Monadnock (1-5) to take on Isaiah Prince and the Huskies at 7 p.m.
