Mascenic budget sound, responsible
To the editor:
Now that the deliberative session is over, the Mascenic Regional School District is focusing its energy on improving student learning. Working with Superintendent Goguen and district administrators we crafted an appropriate, fiscally responsible FY15 budget.
Our budget philosophy is simple. Student learning is at the core of all our decisions. Even with a flat budget, we know we can improve areas of concern. This is being accomplished through a strong collaborative partnership K-12, between the superintendent, administrative team, faculty, staff and board. Our goals are numerous but the focus is clear.
Goal 1: Improve student learning through PD and curriculum alignment to address areas of concern in math and inquiry skills. These improvements are needed by our students to become the critical thinkers we need as citizens of a 21st century America. With improvement in these skills, our students become the care takers of our democracy. This action item is in progress.
Goal 2: Improve the salary structure for our faculty to reduce turnover in our younger faculty, thereby reducing the resources needed to continuously mentor new teachers that leave due to lower than average salaries. This improvement took place during negotiations with MEA.
Goal 3: Improve benefits (Affordable Health Care) and salary for our paraprofessionals. This improvement took place during negotiations with MESSA.
Goal 4: Craft a fiscally responsible budget that does not create a negative impact on student learning. We believe the district has done this through shared leadership at all levels.
So please vote on Tuesday, March 11 and support our students. Please vote in the affirmative for the budget and all warrant articles that the board unanimously supports.
