Teacher merit pay not the answer

To the editor:

Merit pay is not the answer for the Mascenic District. Jason Somero might be surprised to know that under our previous two principals, if they didn’t have to show cause for firing teachers on tenure, some of our best teachers would be gone; and some not especially gifted staff would be making top dollar.

I have seen teachers who weren’t renewed because of a personality conflict during those first three untenured years. Several years ago, one excellent math teacher said the principal had done him a favor; he would be making $10,000 more in Milford and he hadn’t been looking for another job.

The contract won’t financially benefit senior teachers very much, but it might help recruit and retain some new teachers. Are they as skilled as the more experienced teachers? Maybe not, but that is why we have a new teacher evaluation and support system, to help new educators grow and develop.

We would like them paid well enough so that they won’t leave as soon as they have experience. I will also say that I am thankful that we now have a principal and vice principal that we trust to fairly evaluate us as teachers.
