PETERBOROUGH — A man walking on Route 202 near South Meadow School was hit by a car and killed Friday evening.

According to Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard, Michael Dugrenier, 51, of Peterborough was hit by a 2012 Cooper driven by Peter Blais, 34, of Concord, who was driving north at about 6:30 p.m.

Dugrenier was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a press release, Guinard said the exact cause of the accident is not known. The accident is being investigated by Peterborough police and a state police Technical Reconstruction Team.

Guinard said Blais stopped his car, which had heavy front-end damage, after the accident.

Blais was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital for evaluation, according to Peterborough Fire Chief Joseph Lenox. On Monday, hospital officials said Blais had been treated and released.

Lenox said emergency crews detoured traffic through the South Meadow School parking lot, which is directly opposite the site of the accident until after the scene was cleared.

Dugrenier was a longtime employee of S.R. Jones Excavation in Antrim, where he had worked for 15 years as an excavation operator, and had lived in Antrim for many years before moving recently to Peterborough, according to Susan Stalbird, who works at S.R. Jones.

“He had been out on sick leave, but we still consider him an employee,” Stalbird said on Monday. “He was an outdoorsy guy, who loved to go fishing and camping, and he could really make the excavator dance.”

Stalbird said Dugrenier ran the excavator when the company worked on the town library and when the remains of the historic building at 46 Main St. in Antrim were torn down after it was destroyed by fire in 2010.
