The newly-formed Monadnock Valley Patriots adult Special Olympics program held their first basketball tournament last Friday in front of a packed gym full of fans and supporters.

Event organizer Louise Guillemette was pleased with the support and was “happy to see people enjoying themselves throughout the evening.”

Basketball is one of the many sports the Patriot athletes participate in.

“We wanted to join the communities in showing one of the sports our athletes do,”said Guillemette.

According to Guillemette, the athletes were extremely excited to be sharing the court with their heroes from local police and fire departments.

The fundraiser event raised over $1,000, which will go directly to the team’s future endeavors.

“We could not have done this without the support of everyone who volunteered their time,” Guillemette said, “the fans who came to watch the game, the referees and the coaches in making this event very successful.Coach “Dutch” Stauffeneker from New Ipswich and Coach Bill Kennedy of Peterborough coached the teams and receive credit for teaching the game of basketball to the athletes.

Next up for the Patriots are the Regional Games on Saturday on March 15 at Keene State College, followed by the State Games in Derry on Saturday on April 5.

“We do hope to do this again next year and get more of the Monadnock area participation of Police and Firefighters involvement in playing this unified basketball event,” Guillemette said.as a parent of an athlete myself, I know how much time it takes in volunteering but the end results are so rewarding watching these athletes progress, improve and succeed in these sports, not only are these athletes joined together as a team, they have become a family.”
