FRANCESTOWN — Following a heated race for the open Select Board position, Abigail Arnold will keep her seat, with 342 votes in her favor and 256 for her opponent.

Arnold ran against Lisa Stewart, and support for both candidates could be seen around town in the weeks leading up to the vote. Though no one official ran for the open ConVal School Board representative seat, write-in candidate Stephan Morrissey has won the race with 82 votes.

With the debate over Cressy Hill Road’s classification looming over the Select Board race and how each of the candidates comes down on the issue, the topic was heavily discussed before and during voting Tuesday.

“The Select Board, how should I put it ... battle. I guess that’s an important issue,” Lisa Wilsher of Francestown said at the polls on Tuesday. “Well, unfortunately people are attaching this issue with the Cressy Hill Road bridge to who is elected selectman. I don’t think those two things are connected, but people are connecting them.”

In a recent letter to residents, Arnold addressed the history of Cressy and how town documents are contradictory, but reflect a Class VI road designation with a bridge maintained by the town.

Some residents said that the way to solve the Cressy debate, putting candidates aside, would be to look to town documents. “I think it’s just going to have to be looking at what was the original document that was signed. What was the original agreement?” Ben Harrington said Tuesday. “Any practice beyond that, whether it was correct or not, I think is kind of a moot point.”

In an interview Wednesday, Arnold said, “I had a lot of people who worked very hard and made a big effort to run a clean campaign. I’ll continue to try and do a good job on behalf of the town.” Arnold did not wish to comment on the Cressy Hill Road debate associated by some with the race.

No one was running for the ConVal School Board seat, that is until Stephan Morrissey stepped forward two weeks ago to run a write-in campaign. If Morrissey hadn’t been elected, the ConVal School District would have appointed a Francestown resident to the one representative seat for the town.
