Wake up, Temple, ConVal costs up

To the Editor:

The Conval school district is killing us. If the residents of this district have to keep throwing money at the system then something is wrong. More money doesn’t mean a  better education. More money doesn’t mean better test scores. The High School gymnasium definitely needed to be upgraded but, for years the High School survived very nicely without bus lanes. For years the Middle School survived nicely without upgrading the exit roads.

In Temple the Conval taxes constitute 72 percent of our tax rate. The school tax percentage is expected to go up again next year. It’s time, Temple, to stop and smell the taxes. The big money towns listened to Gail Cromwell and David Martz debate the shrinking enrollment verses expenditures. They just turn their heads and say: Go away and don’t bother us.

Mascenic High School has a 2 percent Necap score higher than Conval in reading. Mascenic has the same Necap score in math. Mascenic has a 9 percent higher Necap score in writing than Conval. Mascenic has higher Necap scores and educates their students for $4,947 dollars (cost per student) less than Conval. What’s wrong with this picture? It’s time for Temple to take a serious look at pulling from the Conval School District and investigate our students going to Mascenic.

It doesn’t matter what anyone says, education is a business. Any business that is losing business, i.e. students, has to make cut backs in spending. Unfortunately that may mean the elimination of employees. You can’t buy education by continually throwing money at it. Wake up Temple!!
