TEMPLE — George Willard came out on top of a five-man race for the seat left open by Select board member Mike Darnell this year.

Willard won the majority vote, with 220 ballots cast in his name, beating out fellow contenders Ken Caisse, 137 votes, Kenneth J. Sullivan, 101 votes, Luke Peterson, 20 votes and Kenneth Patria, 1 vote.

“I would just like to thank everyone that voted for me, and everyone that turned out to vote,” said Willard in a phone interview on Wednesday. He said that moving forward, the issue that he felt should be at the forefront of his mind were the property taxes in town.

“All the costs make the property taxes what they are. I think in my role, I’m going to take a good look at how we can save money and keep that foremost in my mind,” said Willard.

Willard also commented on the issue of Town Meeting vs. ballot voting, which was on the ballot this year by petition. Though Town Meeting will remain in Temple, as making the switch from Town Meeting to ballot vote requires a three-fifths vote, the majority of voting residents were in favor of making the switch.

“I still believe in traditional Town Meeting,” said Willard. “But it seems a growing number of people are opting for SB2. Then again, I’ve heard from people in other towns [that have SB2 voting] that wish for Town Meeting back. I’m still in favor of traditional Town Meeting.

Though they fell short in the Select Board race, Peterson and Sullivan found victory in other places on the ballot. Peterson was elected with 202 votes to the position of fire engineer, winning over Caisse, Patria and Art Kelley. Sullivan, along with Mike Davidson, was the write-in winner for the Budget Advisory Committee, which did not have any candidates on the ballot this year.
