Library happy to include Sharon

To the editor:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank the residents of Sharon for voting to pay for Peterborough Town Library cards on a per capita basis. This is a change from the previous arrangement, which provided service on a per-card basis.

The trustees and staff of the library are thankful for your willingness to support the library in a more equitable manner. It is gratifying to us.

If you were at Sharon’s Town Meeting, you know that some of the information reported in this newspaper on March 13 was incorrect. The $30 cost cited in the article is not “per card,” but instead per capita — $30 for each of Sharon’s 352 residents. A per capita fee is the same method used to figure Sharon’s contributions to Peterborough for police, fire and recycling services.

When Sharon and Peterborough officials met for a negotiating session in December, it was stated that the $30 per capita contribution could be the beginning of a gradual increase to $35 next year and $45 the following year. Sharon voters did not vote on those possible increases, which would be presented to them in the years they would take effect.

Not allowing Sharon residents to have library cards at all if the town did not agree to the per capita payment was an option discussed in the negotiation. The trustees, however, never voted on that option and now will not need to. We will be focusing on making the Peterborough Town Library the best it can be for all of our patrons.

Marcia Patten,

chair, Board of Library Trustees
