GREENFIELD — Fire Chief Loren White presented the Select Board with a plan for his proposed Fire Department committee at a meeting on Wednesday.

White said he is seeking “fresh eyes” to find new perspectives in hopes of increasing enrollment in the department. White believes that could increase the number of members for the volunteer department as well as help maintain member retention.

The Select Board was interested in looking deeper into the proposed committee. According to Town Administrator Aaron Patt, board members would like to know what factors the community thinks are preventing enrollment?

The board is concerned that members of the Fire Department no longer work in town, which creates longer response times.

According to Patt, the Select Board is very interested in moving forward with White’s proposed committee, placing an emphasis on the notion that community feedback is important.

The board went through the protocol of forming a committee with White during the meeting.

Because White had his proposal for the committee recognized at Town Meeting, the Select Board will be appointing the committee’s members. The Select Board made sure that White knew all meetings have to be scheduled and that he is responsible for tracking meeting minutes.

According to White, six or seven Greenfield residents have come forward, volunteering for the committee.

“I’d like to have 10 or so, but I have enough to hold a first meeting,” he said recently.

White plans to have the committee’s first meeting in the coming weeks.

Also at the Select Board meeting, Janet and Paul Renaud proposed that the town hold a Monadnock Music concert on the sanctuary floor of the Meetinghouse on July 3.

“Greenfield has never had one of these concerts before, many of the surrounding towns have,” said Paul. “It’s a great way to promote the town. Nobody will be making money off of it. Many of the people who go to these concerts go to all of them.”

The concert will be free, with donations accepted, and will take place at 3 p.m., with a reception following the show.

The Select Board unanimously approved the proposal.
