American folk band to play Delrossi’s
Flynn Cohen leads Deadstring Ensemble
Acoustic guitarist/composer Flynn Cohen of will lead the Deadstring Ensemble for a concert of traditional American folk music at Delrossi’s Trattoria on Saturday at 8 p.m.
In an interview Tuesday, Cohen, a Gloucester, Mass., resident, said that his last solo album was made up entirely of his own, original music. The album that he will be promoting during his upcoming show at DelRossi’s, however, took a 180 from that, and will be made up of nothing but traditional music. That is, as traditional as music can be once it’s gone through the transformation of over 100 years of Americana influence, he said.
Influenced by Irish traditional music, bluegrass, old time, folk-rock and early music, the group will be performing material from Flynn’s three solo albums, as well as the band’s debut release “The Lazy Farmer,” a collection of traditional music gathered from the American diaspora of the Anglo-Celtic ballad singing and fiddle music traditions. The group brings driving, Irish-influenced rhythms and graceful precision to plucked-string interpretations of traditional fiddle tunes.
All of the songs from Cohen’s new album, “The Lazy Farmer,” are songs that Cohen has recreated from printed and recorded sources of music originating from the mid-18th century, from the Scottish-English border and Ireland.
“They came to America, and over the course of hundreds of years, have evolved into these songs that are Celtic, but have a down-home sound, a little musical melodic twang, and sometimes the vernacular can be down-home or southern,” explained Cohen. “A lot are ones that their sound has retained that flavor of their Celtic roots, but have become this new American fiddle tune.”
Dubbed “a versatile string virtuoso” by Dirty Linen Magazine, Cohen has traveled the world for almost two decades as guitar accompanist to many of the great performers in traditional and contemporary acoustic music, including Irish accordion legend John Whelan; famed folk singers Aoife Clancy, Cathie Ryan, Ruth Moody and Adrienne Young; fiddlers Laura Cortese, Lissa Schneckenburger and Jake Armerding; Christmas Celtic Sojourn, Women of Ireland, and many others.
Flynn Cohen and the Deadstring Ensemble is made up of Cohen on guitar, mandolin and vocals, backed by Matt Heaton on guitar and bouzouki and Danny Noveck on guitar and fiddle. The group will be at Delrossi’s Trattoria in Dublin on Saturday. Tickets are $12. Reservations are recommended.
