Foreign languages are a must, thanks
To the editor:
The World Languages Department at ConVal High School held an Honors Induction Ceremony at the Lucy Hurlin Theater on May 21. Special thanks to Frau Hodgdon, Senor Kennedy, Maestra Krapohl and Madame Streeter for sharing their students’ achievements with parents.
In a global economy of some seven billion speakers of various languages, the critical need for highly effective world language programs has been well established. Businesses increasingly demand multilingual, multicultural talent. Foreign language literacy has also been proven to strengthen achievement across all academic fields.
Ironically, despite the documented advantages of multilingualism, foreign language programs at the secondary level have been threatened by budgetary constraints. Thankfully, our administration and School Board have preserved our World Languages Program at ConVal High School, continuing to offer instruction in three languages. Retaining well-trained teachers such as Madame Streeter, who inspires and engages students is essential, and we appreciate the district’s commitment to our children.
