Marty Taylor of Jaffrey was known for his love of motorcycles — both riding and repairing them. Now, every year, riders gather in Jaffrey in Taylor’s memory to ride around the region and raise money for a scholarship, in Taylor’s name, for a Conant High School graduate.

Taylor, a lifelong resident of Jaffrey, was killed in 2006 while riding his motorcycle on Peterborough Street in Jaffrey, on the way to visit his parents, when a driver turned in front of him, colliding with his bike. In 2007, the year after Taylor’s death, a tradition was started — a motorcycle rally that is mainly a fundraiser for the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce, with a portion of the proceeds going to support a scholarship in Taylor’s name to assist a Conant graduate who is looking to attend vocational school.

On Sunday, about 85 riders gathered in the Monadnock Plaza parking lot in Jaffrey for the annual Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce Rally ‘Round Monadnock, sponsored by Red’s of Jaffrey and Monadnock Disposal Service. The riders paid $20 to register for the ride, which traveled in a loop through Swanzey, Westmoreland, Harrisville and back to Jaffrey for a barbecue at the Jaffrey American Legion. The motorcyclists made predetermined stops to collect photographic evidence of their journey, in a virtual scavenger hunt. The pictures made them eligible to enter a drawing for a $150 gift certificate donated by Howard’s Leather of Spofford.
