Car versus motorcycle accident results in fatality

JAFFREY – A New Ipswich man is dead following a car versus motorcycle accident Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Hillcrest Road and Route 124 in Jaffrey.

According to a press release from the New Hampshire State Police, Frederick W. Hamman, 43, of New Ipswich, was operating a 1998 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on Route 124 when he was struck from behind by a white 2001 Ford F-150 driven by Ralph J. Calisto, 69, of New Ipswich, while Hamman was making a legal right-hand turn onto Hillcrest Road. Hamman suffered serious bodily injury and was transported by Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance to Monadnock Community Hospital, where he later died, according to the release.

Calisto and a male juvenile passenger were transported to Monadnock Community Hospital by Peterborough Fire Department Ambulance to be checked; no injuries were reported.

The cause of the accident is still unknown and is under investigation by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit and Jaffrey police.

The accident was initially reported via Southwestern Fire Mutual Aid as a car versus bicycle accident with serious injuries.

Peterborough emergency personnel were requested and responded, providing additional medical support on scene.

Jaffrey police combed the scene, taking photos of the site of the accident, which took place in front of the Jaffrey Well Field on Turnpike Road. Route 124 East, by Hillcrest Road, was closed to traffic, with vehicles being asked to avoid the area. Vehicles travelling down Hillcrest Road were turned around and rerouted through Nelson Circle, while the scene was under investigation.
