Bus stop changes made address safety

JAFFREY — There will be some changes to local bus routes for Jaffrey and Rindge students this year.

On Monday, the School Board met with Marc Raposo and Joel Weissman of Community Transportation to discuss changes in the bus routes this year for the Jaffrey-Rindge School District. There have been some changes to the routes, said Raposo, some due to changes in student demographics, and some for safety reasons.

Currently, the practice is to drop off or pick up students on the first pass of their stop, if a bus has to backtrack a particular route, said Raposo. Going forward, the bus will stop on the pass that has the student’s home on the same side as the bus door, to prevent students crossing the street unnecessarily. This will only effect one student, said Raposo, and he assured the board that he would contact the parents of that student personally to explain the change.

Jaffrey Grade School students on the Route 13 Turnpike will now ride bus 51, to eliminate a potentially dangerous left-hand turn on the route of bus 52. Times for Jaffrey Grade School buses will be adjusted slightly to ensure that students are not arriving at the school prior to 8:30 a.m. Middle and High School students on Proctor Road will now ride bus 50. All residents of Jaffwoods apartments will now ride bus 49, instead of splitting elementary, middle and high school students between buses 49 and 52. Forristall Road students will now ride bus 44, and elementary school students on Scotts Lane, Atlantic and Converseville roads will now ride bus 46. There will be no bus stop on Ingalls Road for Jaffrey Grade School at this time.

Raposo said Community Transportation will hold an orientation for kindergarten students to explain bus safety rules.
