McGurk, Fafard named Division III cross-country all-stars
On Tuesday night, Mascenic senior Elizabeth McGurk and sophomore Tim Fafard were chosen as Division III all-stars by the New Hampshire Cross-Country Coaches Association.
Both are coming off impressive seasons, where they each qualified and ran in the New England Championships last Saturday.
McGurk capped off her final cross-country season by finishing 59th out of 262 runners in New England at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland, Maine. She was the 12th runner from New Hampshire in the race, a drastic improvement from just one week prior. It was her first time making it to New Englands.
At Meet of Champions on Nov. 3 at Nashua South High School, McGurk placed 23rd. At the state race, McGurk posted a personal best rime of 19:22.8 and improved by over a minute and 48 positions from 2011. She was the second runner for Division III to finish at Meet of Champions.
That was also an improvement over the previous week, when she was fourth at the Division III Championships on Oct. 27. During the regular season, McGurk had three wins, including a victory at Mascenic’s homecoming.
Fafard had a tremendous sophomore season and the future looks bright. In less than ideal conditions, Fafard finished 46th out of 264 runners at the New England Championships and was 10th overall from New Hampshire in his first trip to the regional race.
In his first appearance at Meet of Champions, Fafard was seventh overall, second from Division III and first among all sophomores with a time of 16:06.3. At the Division III race at Derryfield Park in Manchester, Fafard placed third, seven spots ahead of his finish as a freshman. Fafard was also victorious in three races during the season, also winning at Mascenic’s homecoming.
McGurk and Fafard are also eligible for the New Hampshire All-State team, which will be revealed at a Dec. 2 banquet.
