Letter: Middle school closure may be possible
To the editor:
In a recent letter to the editor, Marian Alese, ConVal Business Administrator, wrote “The ConVal Articles of Agreement require that we maintain eight elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school. Until that changes, we may see lower class sizes than the state guidelines.”
In reference to the district’s middle schools, Article No. 5 reads, “Grades 5-8 may be educated in the middle schools in Antrim and Peterborough.” As a result of this language, the closure of one middle school in the ConVal District could be accomplished in one of two ways: either by an amendment to the Articles requiring a two-thirds majority vote of the entire district or by a process wherein the administration recommends one middle school closure and the school board approves it.
Although there is no question that the Articles of Agreement require the ConVal District to maintain eight elementary schools and a high school unless amended, to the best of my knowledge, the ConVal administration and school board received a clarification from legal counsel that the language of Article item No. 5 does indeed permit the closing of a middle school without an amendment to the current Articles.
If this is not the case, please inform. But if I am correct, please check the facts before writing and/or publishing information that is at best, misleading.
