Mascenic boys finish tourney 1-2
The Mascenic boys basketball team lost 73-65 to Monadnock in its finale of the Zero Gravity Holiday Tournament at Keene State College on Sunday.
The Vikings finished the three-game tournament with a 1-2 record after posting a 73-38 win over Hinsdale in the opener on Friday before dropping the final two games.
Mascenic fell behind 21-9 after the first quarter on Sunday and spent the rest of the game trying to play catch-up.
And they almost completed the comeback. With just 56 seconds left in the game, sophomore Jared Stauffeneker hit his fourth three-pointer to make it just a 67-65 deficit. But Monadnock closed out the game on a 6-0 run to end the Vikings’ chance at a second tournament win.
They trailed by 10 at the half and got within eight during the third before falling behind 50-40 with eight minutes to play.
Stauffeneker finished with a game high 35 points. He shot 11-for-29 from the floor and hit 9-of-12 free throws to go along with his team leading five steals and four assists. Senior Jalen Rines scored 16 points with four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Shane Rautiola led the team with six rebounds to go along with four points.
In game two of the tournament against Newport on Saturday, a win would have put the Vikings into the White Division finals, but they came up short in a 72-54 loss. Mascenic trailed just 32-26 at the half, but were outscored 16-8 in the third and never got closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Stauffeneker had a game to remember, scoring a tournament best 39 points, including seven three-pointers, with six rebounds and two steals, but no other Mascenic player scored more than four.
In Friday’s win over Hinsdale, Stauffeneker and Rines each scored 24 and combined to outscore the entire Pacers’ team by 10 points.
Mascenic plays at Hopkinton on Friday.
