Following the championship games of the Zero Gravity Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament at Keene State College, six local players were recognized for their participation in the four-day event.

Conant senior Devin Springfield was named most valuable player of the Red Division after helping the Orioles win the title over Coe-Brown 74-42. Conant junior Robert O’Brien was named to the Red Division all-tournament team. Two ConVal players, senior Taylor Doyle and freshman Julien Bufalino, were selected for the White Division team after the Cougars fell in the title game, while Mascenic sophomore Jared Stauffeneker also landed on the white all-tourney squad. Conant senior Jake Carlson was chosen for the Stephen Record Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

Springfield averaged a little over 20 points in his two games, including scoring a game high 18 in the win over the Bears on Sunday. He also had six rebounds and five steals in the title game to go along with 23 points and five rebounds in Conant’s tournament opening victory over Keene. The Orioles did not play a second game due to a forfeit. Springfield’s sister Madison was named the girls tournament MVP.

Stauffeneker had a huge tournament, scoring a tournament best 39 points in the Vikings’ second day loss to Newport and followed up that performance with a 35-point effort in a loss to Monadnock on Sunday. He also scored 24 in Mascenic’s only win over Hinsdale on the opening day.

Doyle scored 18 points with eight rebounds in ConVal’s championship game loss to Newport on Sunday. In the previous game, where the Cougars earned a spot in the White Division finals for a second straight year, Doyle notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

O’Brien was the model of consistency, scoring 17 points in each of Conant’s two wins to rank second on the team. He also averaged 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per contest to go along with 2.5 assists.

Bufalino earned a spot in the starting lineup for Sunday’s title game and went on to score 10 points with four rebounds. Coming off the bench on Saturday against Fall Mountain, Bufalino had a tournament high 15 points with three assists, one day after chipping in seven points versus Monadnock.

Carlson became the third Conant player to win the Stephen Record Memorial Sportsmanship Award created in the memory of Record, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on Dec. 27, 2007. Carlson joins his cousin Dan Sirois, last year’s recipient, and Kemph Kim as the award’s winners. For the tournament, he averaged 7.5 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists.
