Despite temperatures nearing single digits and no sun to speak of, the ConVal alpine ski team took to the slopes of Crotched Mountain Ski & Ride on Thursday for the second meet of the season.

The Cougars were racing for the first time since Dec. 20, but did quite well for a team with two weeks off between competitions.

The boys finished third overall with 358 points, just 21 behind the winner, Souhegan, and 19 off the pace of second place Milford. The girls were fourth out of five teams, finishing with 348 points.

And both squads were able to do so despite a pair of falls from their top skiers in the opening run.

Freshman Maura Rapposelli cruised to a win in her first ever high school race on Dec. 20, but fell part way down the mountain in her first run on Thursday and finished with a time of 53.33 seconds. But in her second run, Rapposelli posted the second best time of any skier, 37.13, to place 10th overall.

Junior Garrett Caisse paced the boys out of the second position. Caisse was consistent in his two runs, posting times of 38.34 and 38.80 seconds to finish fifth overall and first for the Cougars. Junior Ben Wescott, who led ConVal in the season opener and skied first for the team on Thursday, fell in his first run and was unable to finish and then was disqualified in his second attempt.

Ben Aldrich finished 11th overall and second for the Cougars. Aldrich’s two runs were just .39 seconds apart in times, 46.23 and 46.62.

Owen Kuchinos was 16th overall and Rob Peterson placed 18th to round out the scoring for ConVal.

With just a 21-point difference in ConVal’s score compared to Souhegan’s winning tally, it could have been much closer had Wescott finished and sophomore Tiivo Ruutopold skied.

Martina Masce, the top returning skier from last year, posted a solid time of 46.27 seconds in her first run, but saw it dip to 53.56 in her second trip down the mountain and finished 17th overall.

Julia Walden looked primed for a strong overall finish after a solid time of 43.74 seconds, but saw her time drop to 56.89 seconds in her second run. Walden was one spot behind Masce in 18th.

Larkin DeVinne finished with times of 53.98 and 54.71 in her two attempts to place 24th overall and fourth for ConVal to close out the scoring.

ConVal will return to Crotched Mountain on Thursday for its only official home meet, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Congrats to Conval skiers, way to go!
