Watch out for Vikings

The Mascenic girls basketball team is defying the odds and continue to be the story of the winter.

Take five years of losing every game and add in parts of two other seasons, and the Vikings were due.

But they are surpassing even my wildest dreams for a successful season.

On Friday night, Mascenic won its fourth game of the season, this time in overtime, to reach the most wins since 2005-06. For those who have followed my work, that predates my coverage of the local sports scene.

Conant’s Tonyai continues
to dominate

Conant senior Katie Tonyai is one of the athletes that you just want to see do well.

She is nice, smart and extremely talented and is going to do well in whatever she decides to do with the rest of her life.

But for now, I am content with watching her destroy the sprinting competition.

Every weekend, Tonyai makes the trip to one of the few indoor track facilities used and comes home with two wins. Hopefully that will be the case when the Division II Championships are held on the first Sunday of February.

Mascenic Hall of Fame

Since ConVal began its athletic hall of fame I have been in favor of every school opening up its record books and celebrating all the past has to offer.

It is such a great idea and only good can come from it. With Mascenic now creating a spot for its former athletes, my mind has been going through the names, teams and coaches I have covered that should one day be included.

But I don’t know a lot about the school’s past, so please let me know of potential candidates so I can keep a running list.

A couple losses

Last week, the Conant boys and girls basketball teams each saw their bids for a perfect season go by the wayside with a pair of losses decided by one-possession.

But I don’t think it was a bad thing. Actually, I believe those two defeats will help those teams through the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs.

Both coaches aren’t nearly as concerned with a loss in January as they are with one in March. Neither am I.

What a start

ConVal freshman Maura Rapposelli has produced one of the best starts to a high school skiing career that I have ever seen. She has won three of four races and likely the only reason she doesn’t have four is because of a fall.

Go to Conant tonight

The Hoops for Hope fundraiser is always a good time and a great way to bring awareness to a deadly disease. Mix in a little basketball with two rival schools and you have a great way to spend a Tuesday evening. So you should go. I will be there.
