PETERBOROUGH — Firefighters put out a chimney fire at a home at the end of Old Town Farm Road early Monday afternoon.

Debby Kaiser, who lives at 180 Old Town Farm Road, said she was watching the Obama inauguration ceremonies on television when she heard a loud noise coming the chimney next to her and noticed that birds outside her window suddenly flew off. She went outside, saw smoke coming from the chimney, and called 911.

“They were here in minutes,” Kaiser said. “The message is: Get your chimney swept.”

Fire Chief Joseph Lenox said the fire was quickly brought under control. Firefighters used dried chemicals to suppress the fire at the bottom of the chimney. There was no significant damage to the house.

People the story says the reason this person had a chimney fire is because they didn't sweep the chimney. Hog wash how many of you sweep the tail pipe out on your car? How many tail pipe fires you have? When your system does not work correctly the fuel will not be burnt at the fire. This fuel then goes up your chimney as a gas and if allowed to cool in the chimney returns to its original form which is creosote. If the system works right there will almost never be creosote in the chimney. Chimney fires happen because things aren't right, its called sweeping a chimney and not cleaning a chimney for a liability issue. Chimneys are swept to reduce acid deterioration. If creosote is building up in your chimney, do yourself a favor and get a certified (key words) chimney professional to look at it. I have no ax to grind as I am not from your state just want to educate you a little.
