CV’s Michalak places eighth
With over 600 skiers in attendance at the first of two New Hampshire Coaches Series races, it was a measuring stick to see where some of the ConVal Nordic team members stood just two and a half weeks before the Division II state meet.
And it was no surprise that junior Sydney Michalak was among the best females in the girls A classic race at Whitaker Woods in North Conway on Saturday.
Michalak finished eighth overall in 17 minutes and 34 seconds and was second among Division II skiers.
In addition to her top 10 finish, Michalak also put herself in line to qualify for the NH Eastern High School Girls Championship Team for the second time.
The team is comprised of the top 24 skiers and is based on the finish at the two Coaches Series races. The second one will be held on Feb. 9 at White Mountains High School.
Junior Rowan Wilson placed 43rd in the girls A race in 20:28.6 and senior Annie Williams finished 85th with a time of 22:35.4.
Maggie Zavgren, who competes as a Wilton-Lyndeborough student, but practices with ConVal, finished 113th out of 149 racers in the girls A race, doing so in 23:51.4.
Junior Ben Wescott landed the top spot for the ConVal boys in the A race, taking 68th overall in 17:40.7. Tyler Aborn was the only other Cougar in the race and finished 134th.
Jimmy Gombas placed 17th in the boys B race in 19:26, while August Bomer-Lawson was 51st.
Lucy Beyer came in 54th in the girls B race, followed by Kelsa Danforth, 75th, and Anna Topping, 77th.
ConVal travels to Hanover on Wednesday and will compete at Souhegan on Saturday.
